Ideal Weight Calculator
Estimate your ideal body weight based on height, age, and gender using 4 popular medical formulas — plus the healthy BMI weight range.
How Much Should I Weigh?
Ideal body weight (IBW) was originally developed to estimate drug dosages. Over time it became a widely used general health guideline. It factors in height and gender but does not account for body fat percentage, muscle mass, or individual differences.
Age & Gender
Males generally weigh more than females at the same height due to higher muscle mass and bone density. After ages 16–17 for males and 14–15 for females, height stabilizes, though muscle mass continues to change with age and activity level.
Body Frame Size
Frame size is measured by wrist circumference relative to height. A large-framed person naturally weighs more than a small-framed person at the same height. Adjust ±10% from the medium-frame estimate as a rough guide.
The 4 IBW Formulas
| Formula | Male (over 5ft) | Female (over 5ft) |
|---|---|---|
| Hamwi (1964) | 48 kg + 2.7/inch | 45.5 kg + 2.2/inch |
| Devine (1974) | 50 kg + 2.3/inch | 45.5 kg + 2.3/inch |
| Robinson (1983) | 52 kg + 1.9/inch | 49 kg + 1.7/inch |
| Miller (1983) | 56.2 kg + 1.41/inch | 53.1 kg + 1.36/inch |
Healthy BMI Range
The WHO recommends a BMI of 18.5–25 as the healthy range for adults. Using your height, we calculate the weight range that keeps you within this BMI band — often the most practical target for general health.
